USING A STORAGE RACK TO SECURE YOUR BIKES IN LIMITED SPACE
A shed would be the ideal place to store your bicycles when you’re not using them, but unfortunately, not many of us have the opportunity to build a shed on our property in the city, and there might not be enough space for garage bike storage. Most people don’t want to lean their rides against a wall or leave them lying on the floor for fear of damage to components or injury to family members who might trip over them, so getting a quality storage rack is a great solution.
However, in making the decision of which particular type of bike wall mount to buy, it is important that you establish whether you’re looking for a permanent or temporary fixture. The permanent ones will need to be bolted or screwed in place, usually on the wall or ceiling. If you own your home, then there’ll be no issue with this, but it could prove problematic if you’re renting so be sure to get whatever permission you need. The temporary ones are just as the name implies; portable and easy to remove when necessary.
PERMANENT STORAGE SOLUTIONS
- Vertical racks – These are perfect for when the layout of your home is such that there is insufficient width but more than enough depth. It’s the most effective storage method, especially when there are multiple cycles that need to be stored, which is why it is commonly used by shops.
In its simplest form, the product will consist of a basic hook that you can thread into a masonry wall plug or screw into a wall post or ceiling beam. Selecting one of the specialty brands here on Bike Chaser will get you a wider range of wheel size compatibility. This means that even if your ride has an unusual size (fat or large mountain bikes, for instance), you can still hang them at home without much ado.
- Horizontal racks – These would be best if you have limited depth but enough width. Since they function by holding the bike underneath the top tube, they tend to take up more space than their vertical counterparts.
The options in this category range from basic models that include foldable hangers bolted to the wall, to those with adjustable hooks that can fit carious shapes as well as those that have racks that can double as shelves.
- Hoists – If you would prefer to suspend your rides from the roof, then the hoist system is for you. Since installation is a lot more complicated and accessing your bicycles will be relatively difficult, this is best for those who will only need to use them occasionally.
TEMPORARY STORAGE SOLUTIONS
- Ceiling to floor rack – This is basically a pole that clamps between the floor and ceiling, with protruding hangers where you can place your cycles.
They usually use a spring or hinge to lock your them securely, and are most often designed for two, though you can usually add space for more with aftermarket kits.
- Free-standing racks – They are often referred to as bike trees. They work by having a weighted or tripod base, with a pole that bicycles can be hung on. They offer a great alternative if you need something you can move from place to place regularly, or if you just don’t want to get involved with drilling or screwing anything in place.
