HOW TO CHANGE YOUR BIKE CHAIN
As you use your bike over the years, the parts begin to wear out. This includes the bike chain, and you’ll need to change it.
Although cyclists often refer to one that’s worn out as having “stretched”, it’s not technically accurate. What has happened is that the pins that connect its links have worn out, making it weaker and less stable than it ought to be.
It is best if you change it regularly. 5,000 to 8,000 kilometres is a good range for most people. This is because it is cheaper to change chains than to change a cassette or chainring.
Should you Replace?
You are going to need a wear tool to check for stretch. You should hook one end of the tool over one roller and the other end will rest on it. Alternatively, you can put the other end in an opening between two rollers. If the tool drops between the rollers, this means you have to replace it.
Chain Link Removal
To remove the chain from your bike, you have to first disconnect it. There are different ways to go about this, depending on whether yours has a master link.
Before you start, you should shift it to the smaller chainring or cog. Alternatively, you can remove the rear wheel or remove it from chainring. This way, you would eliminate the tension it has.
If yours doesn’t have a master link, seat it in the breaker and align the tool’s pin with one of the chain’s pins. Next, turn the removal handle until you have pushed out the pin to the extent that you can now break it.
If you have one, you should locate it. This is the link that looks different from the others when you view it from the side. Squeeze its pins with a plier so that you can pop it open.
A lot of new ones would be too long for your drivetrain. To get the right length, compare it with your old one, and then remove the extras to make them equal.
Installation
Now, you have to install the new one by passing it through the derailleur and reconnecting it.
If you don’t have a master link, use the tool to connect the chain with the pin that the new one has.
If you are repairing an old one, make sure you use a new pin. The pin should also match your speed and brand.
For most pins, what you do is to put it halfway, and then you snap off the protruding end with pliers.
If you are using a master link, insert the chain into each of its halves. Then, snap it together with a master link tool.
You can also install it without using the tool. Assemble it and pull the ends to lock it in place. Next, release the clutch for the derailleur and turn the pedals.
At this stage, the master link will be atop the drivetrain. Step hard on one pedal while your brakes are engaged. This would create tension and click it in place.
