Your bicycle is an investment. Regardless of whether it’s a low-end model or a pro model that costs thousands of dollars, its value is in the experience it provides you whenever you take it out for a spin. As with any other item, keeping it safe when it’s not in use is something you’re going to have to pay attention to if you want to maximize its longevity.
In deciding on the particular bike stand to go with, one key thing to keep in mind is that you’re going to have to choose between one that is stationary and one that is portable. A storage stand that is stationary is ideal if you’re not going to be needing to move it anytime soon, while a portable one would be necessary if you require a degree of flexibility. It could be that you may need to move it to another part of the house regularly or that you foresee an expansion (more bikes than it can handle) in the near future.
The number of bikes you’re going to need to store is another important factor. Some come with space for one or two but you can also find those that can take up to four, five or even six bicycles. Make your decision based on the number you have at the moment as well as the likelihood of buying more.
Keep an eye out for the spacing of the bike display stand too. Some cycles are wider than others and it’s important that you keep your rides from touching one another while in storage. That could lead to them acquiring unsightly scratches and dents by the time you come to take them out when the weather is more conducive to cycling. One trick you can use, depending on the particular model that you have, is to alternate the tyre (front-tyre for one and back-tyre for the next) you use to park them. That will leave more room between them and reduce the chances of contact.
You can get a folding bike stand if you really need to conserve the space in your home, or if you just don’t like the sight of it when it’s not in use. However, one thing that you must consider thoroughly before making the choice to go with a foldable model is durability. They are generally made from lighter materials than their fixed counterparts so be certain to get models made from strong materials and with a proven record of reliability. Shimano and Thule are reputed for their quality products, and you can find a variety of their models on Bike Chaser.
